PERINATAL YOGA - FOR PREGNANCY, BIRTH AND POSTPARTUM

Providing support through Yoga for a healthy and joyful transition to Parenthood

The Birthlight Approach to Prenatal Yoga, as developed by Françoise Freedman, medical anthropologist and founder of the Birthlight Trust UK, is adapted to directly benefit pregnant persons and babies during the 10 lunar months of pregnancy, in the birthing process itself, as well as the tender months of Postnatal adjustment.

 

The Birthlight method takes into account the person as a whole. The techniques and practices encourage a release in the body, as well as on psychological and emotional levels, so that anything that needs to surface can do so in a caring and supportive environment. Through the practice, we aim to counter-balance the daily stress factors in our busy lives by slowing down, promoting connection with the baby, and finding graceful movement and ease of breath. This is what makes the Birthlight approach unique, and what keeps students coming back, many for the second, third or more times.

 

I have been teaching Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga for 15 years, and have witnessed the positive effects of the gentle and anatomically sound practices for parents on their journey through pregnancy and transition to parenthood. 

In my classes:

  • Each participant is welcome in our community circle

  • I strive to create a non-competitive, uplifting and joyful class atmosphere

  • I maintain a non-judgmental and respectful attitude, without imposing our personal preferences or prejudices

  • I teach safe, organic practices that promote health instead of aggravating or triggering symptoms

  • I teach simple and effective techniques that can be used through pregnancy, in the labor process, and in postpartum

  • A spirit of camaraderie snuffs out the need to achieve the perfect pose or the perfect birth or the need to be the perfect parent 

  • We dedicate time and attention to the babies, promoting bonding with baby both inside the belly and outside

Private Instruction in Perinatal Yoga

In our Prenatal Yoga sessions, I will custom design a prenatal yoga and breathing practice to suit your and your baby's needs as they change from week to week. Our yoga practice will strengthen you physically, as well as mentally and emotionally as you adapt to your pregnancy and upcoming transition of birth. You will be equipped with a toolbox of practical, effective techniques to calm and comfort you, to promote connection to yourself and your baby, and to listen to and trust your intuition. These skills will serve you well not only during your pregnancy, but also in childbirth and beyond.

In our Postnatal Yoga sessions we will practice breathing techniques and pelvic mobilization to begin the process of re-knitting the abdominal, pelvic floor and back muscles and related structures. I provide gentle sequences that can be done starting just a few weeks after birth to aid in improving circulation, repositioning of the organs and balancing postpartum hormones. This attention to the birthing person in the weeks after birth contributes greatly to their physical and emotional healing and recovery process, boosting their vitality and overall sense of well-being.
